Central Rio Grande do Sul (Triássic)

The east-western belt extending for about 300 kilometers between the towns of Venâncio Aires and Mata, in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), is extremely rich in tetrapod-bearing outcrops of Triassic age. The PaleoLab, together with Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (FSM), conducted field-trips do these areas since 2010, in the context of research projects funded by the Brazilian agency FAPESP. Among the recovered fossils, dinosaurs, cynodonts, and sphenodontians have been found.
